Storyteller

Sugandh Makwana

An artist whose work weaves together the threads of her Indian heritage and London-based experience into a single, elegant narrative. Deeply inspired by the rich traditions and everyday intricacies of Indian culture, her creations transform overlooked symbols into bold, wearable art. With a poetic touch and a professional craftswoman’s hand, Sugandh infuses her work with both cultural memory and contemporary vision, inviting the wearer into a world where old and new harmoniously converge.

Hailing from India and sculpted by experiences at Central Saint Martins, she looks through the lens of unconscious biases and brings attention to the ordinary yet significant parts of one's culture that add to their personality more than they realise.

She began her journey in jewellery making with a focus on exploring cultural biases, far from the inclusive, cross-cultural narrative she would later embrace.

Growing up, observing the rich cultural tapestry of India, from everyday rituals to elaborate celebrations and then moving to London for her masters,  fostered Sugandh’s appreciation for the significance of cultural details.

Sugandh often reflects that this duality – being rooted in Indian tradition while immersed in a global design capital – has been instrumental in her practice, allowing her to celebrate cultural heritage even as she breaks the conventions of contemporary design. Her journey is, in essence, a story of two cultures interwoven, each enriching the other.

As a passionate creator, she aims to create pieces that transcend cultural barriers and expresses this through bold designs.

Today, Sugandh Makwana continues to carve her path as both a guardian of heritage and an innovator of form. Her biography reads like a journey across cultures and time: from the lively markets and artisans of India to the design ateliers of London, from ancient carving techniques to avant-garde exhibitions. In every facet of her practice, she upholds a commitment to excellence and cultural authenticity.

Through her artistry, she preserves precious traditions by breathing into them new life, and in doing so, she creates jewellery that is not only visually striking but profoundly meaningful. Sugandh’s work invites each of us to reflect on our own stories and heritage, even as it stands at the cutting edge of contemporary design.

It is this rare combination of material innovation, cultural impact, and artistic integrity that defines Sugandh Makwana as an artist – an individual whose creations eloquently speak to the past, present, and future of craft.
