Sugandh Makwana
An artist whose work weaves together the threads of her Indian heritage and London-based experience into a single, elegant narrative. Deeply inspired by the rich traditions and everyday intricacies of Indian culture, her creations transform overlooked symbols into bold, wearable art. With a poetic touch and a professional craftswoman’s hand, Sugandh infuses her work with both cultural memory and contemporary vision, inviting the wearer into a world where old and new harmoniously converge.
Hailing from India and sculpted by experiences at Central Saint Martins, she looks through the lens of unconscious biases and brings attention to the ordinary yet significant parts of one's culture that add to their personality more than they realise.
She began her journey in jewellery making with a focus on exploring cultural biases, far from the inclusive, cross-cultural narrative she would later embrace.
Growing up, observing the rich cultural tapestry of India, from everyday rituals to elaborate celebrations and then moving to London for her masters, fostered Sugandh’s appreciation for the significance of cultural details.
For Sugandh, design is not just visual expression, but language one that speaks of migration, memory, and belonging. Every piece invites introspection: a reminder that culture is not static, but something we continuously reshape.
Today, Sugandh Makwana Studio continues to grow as a space for cultural storytelling where heritage meets innovation, and where jewellery becomes a dialogue between material, memory, and meaning.
